The 79 Series earns its keep on station tracks, mine roads and long dirt-road touring runs, and that is exactly where the factory intake behind the grille works against you. Down low it draws in the bulldust hanging over every unsealed road, so the filter loads up fast and airflow to the engine drops with it. A snorkel moves the intake up to roof height, into the cleaner air above the dust, so a working or touring 79 keeps breathing properly between services. The same height that keeps dust out also keeps water out, which is what turns a flooded causeway from a gamble into a non-event.

TOUGH POLYETHYLENE BUILD, BOLT-ON 79 FITMENT

The Safari ARMAX and V-Spec snorkels here use a UV-stabilised polyethylene body that takes knocks from stones and scrub without cracking and holds its shape through a hot outback summer. Each one is matched to a specific 79 body and engine, with an airbox connection that seals properly and brackets that locate to the factory guard points. In most cases the fitment uses the existing guard holes with only minor trimming to the marked template, so it goes on as a clean bolt-up job rather than a cut-and-hope. For heavy dust work, pre-cleaners and air rams can be added to filter the air before it ever reaches the snorkel.

Intake position and airflow needs differ across the 79's engine generations, so the snorkels are matched to each rather than sold as one-size-fits-all. The 1HZ 4.2L narrow-front era (1999 to 2007) runs its own setup, the 1VD-FTV V8 VDJ79 (2007 to 2023) has a design of its own, and the 2024-on GDJ79 facelift uses a revised arrangement in both 2.8L four-cylinder and 4.5L V8 forms.
